Angel's Envy opens on Main Street, downtown Louisville's first full-production distillery

As downtown Louisville's first full-production distillery opens, another step on the urban bourbon trail has been completed.

"You're seeing the ninth distillery [of the Urban Bourbon Trail] come on line. It completes what we're doing here on Whiskey Row,” said Kent Oyler, President and CEO of Greater Louisville Inc.

After years of planning, Angel’s Envy on East Main Street is opening for tours and tastings Saturday.

“We've only been on the market for about six [years]. In this spot, we've been working on it for about three years now,” said Wes Henderson, co-owner of Angel’s Envy. “We finish [the bourbon] in port wine barrels, which takes bourbon and adds another dimension to it. We say it's bourbon and more.”

Henderson says the port wine barrels add a distinct flavor that enhances the drink.

“We have bourbon in barrels in warehouses, and you get evaporation. It goes in the air, so we say we're sharing it with the angels," Henderson said. "What they don't get is the angel's envy, so that's where the name came from."

Henderson says there's an angel watching over Angel's Envy.

“Dad and I started it about 10 years ago,” Henderson said.

His father, Lincoln Henderson, passed away before he could see his distillery dream come to fruition.

“I wish he was here. But I know he's looking down on us,” Henderson said.

More than 20 million visitors come to Louisville each year. When many of them tour Angel's Envy, Henderson hopes they get a sense of the three generations it took to build the distillery.

"I hope they see an overwhelming sense of family and tradition and bourbon history.”

The Angel’s Envy Distillery will be open for tours on Mondays and Wednesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. and on Sundays from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. Tours will not be available on Tuesdays.
