LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Kentucky State Police say they've charged two parents after a 2-year-old and a 4-year-old were found wandering alone near a highway in Milton, Kentucky.

According to police, officers received a call from a neighbor who spotted the children, both of whom were seen walking within feet of Highway 36, unsupervised. Police say the children were found at least 100 yards away from their home.

Upon examination, Trooper Josh Lawson, spokesman for Kentucky State Police, says it was discovered that one of the children had injuries consistent with criminal abuse.

Trooper Lawson says officers eventually made contact with the parents, who were sleeping at the time.

Both the mother, 24-year-old Brittany Robertson, and the father, were charged with endangering the welfare of a minor. Robertson was also charged with first degree criminal abuse.

The identity of the father was not immediately available through jail or court records.
