Hatchimals are the hottest and hardest-to-find Christmas toy this year

CLARKSVILLE, Ind. (WDRB) -- The hottest toy of the season is on sale at Target for under $50. Too bad there aren't any Hatchimals in stock.

"We actually had 10 (Hatchimals) on Monday. We had a line outside of 30 people, and the first person showed up at 6 in the morning," said Adam Gray, executive team leader of assets protection at Target in Clarksville, Ind.

Gray says he never knows when the next shipment will come. Still, people line up everyday to take a gamble.

"Target is getting them, they're sending them, and they're gone before the store even opens," said Gray, who added that the phone is ringing constantly.

"Probably 20-30 calls a day, easily. Target is doing everything they can to get them to us. The demand is so high, but the supply's not there."

Hatchimals hatch out of eggs and learn to sing, talk and spin.

"Hatchimals is like the thing right now," Gray said.

They are so hot people are buying them just to make a profit. The sellers mark them up on eBay and Craigslist hundreds of dollars, into the thousands.

"It's been real hard. I can't find them anywhere, nowhere," said Donna Mazzoni, who finally found one for her granddaughter online, though she's still looking for one for her niece.

"I gave her $80. I probably would've paid $200, cause she's my only granddaughter," she laughed.

It is being compared to the Tickle Me Elmo mania of the 1990s and the Cabbage Patch Craze of the 1980s. Our Facebook viewers are at their wits end.

"It's so frustrating," Haley wrote. "I've been about in tears. How do you tell a 6 year old SANTA CAN'T GET A TOY?!?!"

"I can't find one for under $100," Becky wrote. "And my granddaughter says it's okay because Santa doesn't need money."

"I think it's so ridiculous there are people who bought this, only to turn around and mark it up three times more than what it goes for," Alysha wrote. "Sadly, my daughter will not be getting one for Christmas this year."

Other hot toys this season? Gray says the new Nintendo system is also going fast.

"The Nintendo also launched a couple weeks ago, and we're pretty much out of that," he said.

Board games are also popular.

"I know Oregon Trail is a hot game," Gray said.

If you are after Hatchimals, ask Santa for patience and luck.

"I guess take your shot, line up outside and pray for the best that it's there," Gray said.

Even Santa is having a hard time finding Hatchimals. Some of our viewers suggested writing Santa a note asking for a gift card, so the child can buy one later.
