LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Louisville man charged with murder after an attempted home invasion pleaded not guilty in court Monday.

Aaron McDuffie, 23, is charged with murder because the Commonwealth Attorney's Office says his actions during an home invasion caused the death of his accomplice.

It happened around 3:30 p.m. on Nov. 18 at a home on Northumberland Drive.

Detectives say McDuffie and 23-year-old Eric Gathwright were trying to break into the home when the woman who lives there shot and killed Gathwright.

We talked to Bruce Haddix's, the homeowner's son, who says he is thankful his mother had a gun.

"She waited in the hallway, and then finally they busted the back window out and that's when she stepped out of the hallway and let one shot go," Haddix said.

The homeowner will not be charged.

Officials with the Commonwealth's Office says they believe McDuffie's murder charge will hold up in court.

The judge set McDuffie's bond at $250,000. He is due back in court next month.

McDuffie's family was in court, but did not want to talk about the case.
