UPS customers can follow holiday packages in real-time as they're delivered

Posted: Updated:

As the online shopping madness begins, this is the first holiday season UPS is letting you follow your deliveries in real-time using a GPS system called "Follow My Delivery."

Here's how it works: You head to and sign up to be a My Choice Customer for free. Next, fill out your home address and email.

When you order a package using Next Day Air or Worldwide Express, you'll get a confirmation email the night before the package is scheduled for delivery.

“At that point, [if] you're not going to be home, you now have the flexibility to reroute that package. You could send it to a neighbor's house, you could send it to a new access point, and that way, you know where and when the package will be delivered,” said Jim Mayer, Public Relations Manager for UPS.

On the morning of the delivery, you'll get another email confirmation that allows you to watch your package make its way to your door with the GPS tracking system.

All deliveries should arrive before 10:30 a.m.

The technology is so accurate that users can watch the driver arrive to a home on a phone or device.

UPS says the programs gives the My Choice members more flexibility, convenience and visibility. The program helps keep the boxes out of the hands of thieves who sometimes target packages sitting on front porches.

It only works for Next Day Delivery and for World Wide Express deliveries, but UPS says it's working on adding the feature to more services in the future.
