LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) – An Owensboro, Ky., man was arrested early Thursday after he stole a police car and led authorities on a pursuit that ended in Southern Indiana, according to Indiana State Police.

Jason Daniel Phillips, 35, was taken into custody near Huntington, Ind., shortly before 4 a.m. and charged with felony escape, auto theft and resisting police.

Phillips had been arrested by the Hancock County (Ky.) Sheriff’s Office and placed in a police vehicle, but he managed to move his handcuffed hands from behind his back, climb through a prisoner cage into the front seat of the car and steal it, police said.

He then led Kentucky police on a chase that crossed into Indiana. The Huntington (Ind.) Police Department placed spikes on U.S. 231, deflating the tires on the car Phillips was driving and stopping the vehicle.

Phillips was being held in the Dubois County Security Center Thursday morning.
