BARDSTOWN, Ky. (WDRB) -- In a small town, neighbors go way back, and the community almost feels like family.

In Bardstown on Friday that extended family was hurting.

Hand in hand with heavy hearts,  they rallied together for one of their own who's endured more pain than most will ever know.

"The first thought when I heard this had happened with Tommy is this is unimaginable," said Jolene Reynolds, a family friend. "It's really unimaginable."

Hundreds lined the procession route for Tommy Ballard stretching from St. Joseph Church to his final resting place at St. Thomas Cemetery.

Ballard was shot in the chest while hunting. A week later, investigators don't know who pulled the trigger or even whether it was a mistake or murder.

"This family has been through nothing but pure hell for the last 15 months, and it's time for an end to this," said Nancy Gibson, a family friend.

Ballard's death follows the disappearance of his daughter, Crystal Rogers. The mother of five vanished in the summer of 2015 and is presumed dead, but no one's been charged.

Many, like Reynolds, are wondering whether Ballard's mysterious killing could be connected.

"Why we stand as a community ... is the unanswered questions," Reynolds said.

Standing shoulder-to-shoulder in solidarity, neighbors told a grieving family that they have their back.

"They have to know that the town is behind them," said Angela Brady, a family friend.

Anyone with tips in the case is asked to contact Kentucky State Police.
