Family of deadly Fern Creek fire victim: 'I think he was just trying to stay warm'
A call about the fire was received Saturday around 3:30 a.m.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Family members say a man killed in a house fire in Fern Creek was likely trying to keep himself warm when the fire spread.
Firefighters from several departments were called around 3:30 a.m. Saturday to a home on Mary Dell Lane near Billtown Road.
"The basement room was on fire, coming out the door and window, and the room above it on the first floor, there was fire coming out the window," said Deputy Chief Robert Storrie with the Fern Creek Fire Department.
When crews went inside, they found the body of 40-year-old Kelly Fawbush, the man who lived alone in the home.
According to the Jefferson County Coroner's Office, Fawbush died of smoke inhalation.
"It's just kind of a shock to wake up and it's the first thing you hear," said Jesse Fawbush, the victim's cousin. "I think he was just trying to stay warm. He didn’t have any heat, water, electric, anything in the house. I know he had a kerosene heater but nothing is visible in the house anymore. We were lucky enough to find a few photos."
The official cause of the fire remains under investigation, but no foul play is suspected.
