Amazon predicts record-breaking Cyber Monday; analysts not so sure

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB/AP) -- The Monday after Thanksgiving is traditionally the busiest online shopping day of the year, but stores are releasing internet deals earlier than ever this year as well as making them available in stores.

Shoppers looking for discounts spurred online sales on Black Friday to a new high.

Analysts say as consumers are buying more and more online, how stores run promotions and discounts has changed as well. Tamara Gaffney, principal analyst and director at Adobe Digital Insights, says "Cyber Monday may not have as much gas left in the tank."

However, online retail giant Amazon expects Cyber Monday to break records.

The company says it will roll out more than 75,000 sales this week on a number of items.

Overall, holiday shopping was down over the weekend. The National Retail Federation says, on average, shoppers spent about $290 over the weekend. That's down nearly 3.5% from a year ago.
