LMPD officer delivers baby girl on Broadway in west Louisville

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- It started off as a normal patrol shift for 1st Division Officer Elisha Thompson, but it turned into the most memorable day of her five-year career with LMPD.

Around 4 p.m. Monday, Thompson was driving down Broadway near 18th Street when a driver flagged her down. Her passenger was in desperate need.

"A lady started flashing her high beams at me and honking her horn, so I slow, she pulls up next to me, and says she's delivering a baby," Thompson said.

This was a  moment where there was no time to think ... only to react.

"I literally just told her to pull your pants down and push," Thompson said.

Thompson says she called for EMS, but the baby girl was born before help could arrive.

"Its already coming. I've got to do something," she said. "So I put some gloves on, cradled the head, she started pushing and out it came."

Once other officers arrived, they wrapped the baby in a sheet from Thompson's car. EMS then rushed baby and mom to the hospital.

"The whole ordeal was no more than 14 minutes from her flagging me down, child coming out and EMS leaving the scene," Thompson said.

And even though she had just helped welcome a new life into the world, she continued working her shift.

"I just went on to my next round, which happened to be a non-injury accident," Thompson said.

She did manage to make a quick phone call in between to her mom.

"She's in Los Angeles, Calif., and I told her to watch the news!"

It was a first for Thompson, who's "delivering" on her oath to protect and serve.

"I just hope mom and baby are going to do well and name it Elisha," she laughed.
