LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Louisville woman is facing serious charges after police say she left three young children home alone for several hours.

According to the arrest report, it happened late Monday night in the 100 block of Caldwell Street near south First Street. Police say they got a call from a woman who told police that a 3-year-old boy knocked on her apartment door crying, saying "momma left me" around 1:30 a.m.

When officers arrived, they discovered two other young children in the residence: a 1-year-old boy and an 8-month-old girl. Police say the children's mother, 25-year-old Mercedes Cannon, returned home while police were still there and admitted she left the children alone around 10 o'clock Monday night.

CPS was called, and the children were placed in the care of Cannon's cousin.

Cannon is charged with three counts of abandonment of a minor. She is being held at Louisville Metro Corrections with a court date of Nov. 30.
