LIVING LOCAL | Hammerheads offers unique flavors in quaint Germantown location

What makes Kentuckiana unique? Is it the food? What about people or places? Each Thursday on WDRB News at 11 p.m., we take a look at the people, places and things that make Kentuckiana special in a weekly series, “Living Local.”

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Thursday nights on Swan means the drinks are flowing and conversation is going at Hammerheads.

It's named after the shark mounted in the front, which is fitting, considering Hammerheads is known for mouth-watering dishes with very distinct flavors.

From chicken grits waffles to shrimp and grits to baby back ribs, it's all good ole' fashioned southern cooking.

The kind your grandmother used to make ... probably not, especially with things like lamb duck and smoked cheddar grit cakes on the menu.

"I love the homemade sauce with the ketchup on my fries," said Todd Weiss, a customer.

"Lots of spices and kind of a red wine vinegar molasses base," General Manager Brian Conn said of the homemade sauce. "Lots of secret ingredients."

Those huge flavors come out of the basement of a two-story Victorian in Germantown, barely big enough to fit more than 10 tables. 

The kitchen is so tight that chefs have to take turns cooking orders.

"Sometimes, we'll open at 5, and it'll be 5:15, and we'll already be on a hour wait," Conn said.

But customers say it's well worth it, with a décor as eclectic as the food.

"It's not something you're going to see, typically, anyplace else," Conn said.

So the next time you're in the neighborhood, stop by, grab a seat and catch up with friends.
