LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Staff members found a fifth-grader carrying a handgun and ammunition in a backpack at an east end elementary school Thursday afternoon.

Another student alerted staff at Stopher Elementary, 14417 Aiken Road, at dismissal time, according to a letter emailed to parents.

No one was hurt. Initial communications from JCPS did not indicate any reason the student brought the weapon to school.

"The student said it was never his intention to harm anyone at the school," the letter from principal Brigitte Owens said. "I am proud of our student who alerted adults," it continued.

LMPD responded to the school, and the student will be disciplined according to the JCPS student code of conduct, school district spokesperson Allison Martin said.
