LACETT | Walz blasts team after 2nd straight loss

LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) – After 7th ranked Louisville’s 78-72 loss to 5th ranked Maryland Thursday at the KFC Yum! Center, Cardinals head coach Jeff Walz did not hold back on what he believes is wrong with his team.

“It’s a lack of effort,” said Walz whose Cardinals dropped to 6-2 on the year. “I don’t know what to tell you. We’re not tough enough to sprint the floor and come up with a stop.”

The Cardinals defense could not stop senior guard Shatori Walker-Kimbrough. She led the way with 26 points as Maryland moved to 7 and 0.

After the game, Walz repeatedly called into question his team’s competitive fire.

“We just live in a generation where everyone wins a trophy,” said Walz. “We’re losers and we got beat. There is no trophy for us.”

Sophomore guard Asia Durr scored 20 in a losing effort for the Cardinals, who lost their second straight game to a top 5 opponent this week. On Sunday, Louisville lost to number 3 South Carolina 83-59.

The Cardinals hope to turn things around this Sunday when they return to action against 17th ranked Kentucky.
