St. Vincent de Paul in need of new clothing, winter coats for teens and children

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A sharp increase in the number of families seeking help with Christmas presents for their children this year has left St. Vincent de Paul in need of last-minute clothing donations from the community.

According to a news release, the organization is asking for donations of new clothing and winter coats in all sizes (infants through adult-sized teenagers) by next Thursday, Dec. 9.

Last year St. Vincent de Paul’s Santa Shop, an annual holiday outreach for families in need, provided free toys and presents to about 800 children. This year, families totaling more than 2,000 children have been referred to St. Vincent de Paul for the event.

"Even though the economy has gotten better for many of us since the Great Recession hit in 2008, poor and lower-income families have not yet recovered," said Ed Wnorowski, St. Vincent de Paul’s executive director and CEO. As a result, referrals for help from families seeking Christmas assistance this year have nearly tripled, he added.

St. Vincent de Paul’s 16th Annual Santa Shop, in which parents receive advance invitations to come and "shop" for free gifts for their children at appointed times throughout the afternoon, will begin at 12:00 Noon on Sunday, Dec. 11, at SVDP’s Family Success Center, 1029 S. Preston St.

St. Michael Catholic Church is providing shoes and accessories, such as hats, scarves, and gloves, for the Santa Shop; and Toys for Tots is once again partnering with SVDP to supply toys.

Clothing for all ages, especially for older youth, including teens wearing adult and larger sizes:

  • Jeans
  • T-shirts
  • Sweatshirts/pants
  • Pajamas
  • Jackets
  • Winter Coats

All donations must be new and unwrapped, and are being accepted weekdays 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at St. Vincent de Paul’s administration building, 1015-C S. Preston St., Louisville, KY 40203. The deadline is Thursday, Dec. 9.
