Eastern Parkway at Barret Avenue closed this weekend while crews repair water main

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Eastern Parkway at Barret Avenue will be closed this weekend while crews from the Louisville Water Company work on one of the city's oldest water mains.

Louisville Water is making repairs to the 48-inch pipe that was installed in 1930 and runs along Eastern Parkway. Since then there have been a number of breaks in the line, including one in April of 2014 that sent water cascading into the streets and into Tyler Park

Now Louisville Water crews are replacing more than two miles of the water main. The 6.4 mile-construction project runs along Eastern Parkway.

The plan requires sliding a smaller 42-inch steel pipe inside the larger, older water main.

Since the water main must be empty to install the new pipe, crews can only do the slip-lining in the winter months when water demand is lower. Because the utility has a network of large water mains, it can remove the Eastern Parkway main from service while other mains pick up the water load.

This is the first slip-lining project in Louisville Water history, though the practice is common in other water utilities.

The intersection will close tonight (Friday) at 8 o'clock, and should reopen by 5 a.m. Monday. Click here for a map showing suggested detours.
