3 council members back petition asking Wal-Mart to return to west Louisville

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Three Louisville Metro council members are asking Wal-Mart to come back to west Louisville.

Jessica Green (D-1), Mary Woolridge (D-3) and Kelly Downard (R-16) are supporting a petition started by Rev. Kirk M. Bush of Harrods Creek Baptist Church.

“We need Wal-Mart. We want Wal-Mart," Green said. "We are encouraging them to rethink their decision and come back to the table. We are desperate for the same goods, services and conveniences available in other parts of our community and implore Wal-Mart to give the 18th and Broadway development another chance.”

Wal-Mart backed out of the plan in October amid lawsuits filed by Louisville residents over the design of the proposed store.

The petition, which can be found here and has 59 signatures as of 8 p.m. Friday, is designed to persuade Wal-Mart to return to the 18th and Broadway site.

“We need Wal-Mart, the best operator in the United States, to bring their wide array of quality products to people who want them and need them but don’t have access to them now,” Downard said. “We need everyone to sign the petition in hopes that Wal-Mart they are to an area in need of quality retail.”

A press conference will be held Monday at 3 p.m. to encourage people to support the petition.
