Louisville woman steals Jeffersonville Police cruiser, leads officers on chase during rush hour

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Louisville woman led Jeffersonville Police on two chases Friday night, and in one of them she was driving a cruiser.

Police were trying to arrest Sara McQuilling, 35, Friday night around 5:30 p.m. when she led several officers on a short pursuit. A male passenger of her car tried escaping out the window, but before doing so, pulled the emergency brake. 

Jeffersonville Police caught the male passenger, who cooperated, but McQuilling fled on foot. She was ultimately caught by a K-9.

But while sitting in handcuffs in a police cruiser, McQuilling got free, hopped into the driver seat and took off in the marked car. She led police on a chase during rush hour, but three officers finally caught her on I-265 using their only vehicles.

McQuilling was arrested and sent to Clark Memorial Hospital to be treated for minor injuries. Three officers sustained minor injuries, and they were treated at the scene.

McQuilling faces the following charges:

  • Criminal Recklessness with a vehicle - Reckless Driving
  • Driving while suspended - Resisting Law Enforcement by foot
  • Resisting Law Enforcement with a vehicle (2 count) - Resisting Law Enforcement physical (2 Counts)
  • Resisting Law Enforcement bodily injury (3 counts) - Possession of a stolen vehicle (2 counts)
  • Theft - Leaving the scene of accident
  • Operator Never Licensed - False Informing
  • Identity Deception - Criminal Confinement
  • Escape (1 Count) - Unauthorized control of a motor vehicle (2 counts)
