WASHINGTON, D.C. (WDRB) -- Dr. Ben Carson is President-elect Donald Trump's pick for Secretary of Housing and Urban Development.

In a release, Trump says "Carson has a brilliant mind and is passionate about strengthening communities and families within those communities. We have talked at length about my urban renewal agenda and our message of economic revival, very much including our inner cities."

Carson was one of more than a dozen challengers to Trump in the 2016 Republican primaries.

He is a retired neurosurgeon and the former director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital.  He earned fame for groundbreaking work separating conjoined twins.
