LEXINGTON, KY. (WDRB) – After a week on the recruiting trail, there was no denying UK head coach Mark Stoops was a bit tired when he took to the podium Monday for a press conference.
There was also no denying he was still on cloud nine.
“We're still on a high after the big victory (vs. Louisville),” said Stoops. “Our feet have really not hit the ground.”
Yes, we are in the middle of a feel good era in Lexington where the Wildcats have been hailed as conquering heroes ever since their win over the Cardinals nine days ago. On Saturday, the team was honored with a standing ovation in the middle of a Kentucky basketball game at Rupp, something that seemed unthinkable after their 0 and 2 start.
“We knew the organization was moving in the right direction, and we knew it's also important to get some victories so the guys can see, again, getting paid off for their hard work. So that was fun, and it was certainly great to end the season the way we did.”
Stoops knows the team has come a long way since he took over more than four years ago. But he also knows there is still much to be done.
Next on his agenda is a trip to the TaxSlayer Bowl to take on Georgia Tech on New Years Eve. It will be UK’ s first bowl game in six years.
“We were the only school in the SEC that has not participated in this bowl. So it will be fun for us,” said Stoops. “Just trying to knock down another door.”
The Wildcats will begin practicing for the bowl game this weekend. They will take a couple days off for finals and then return to the field by the end of next week.
