ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. (AP/WDRB) - A man who was seen beating his 4-month-old son while driving down a highway has been convicted of the boy's murder.

A jury recommended that 36-year-old Daniel Cox be sentenced to life in prison with no possibility of parole for 20 years.

Police say they received a report that a man was seen hitting a child while traveling northbound on S. Dixie Boulevard, near W.A. Jenkins Road in a gold Mercury Grand Marquis on Aug. 6, 2015.

Dena Stevenson, who says she was driving behind Cox and witnessed the beating, called 911.

"It's hard to know that you saw this actually happen," said Stevenson.

"He would swing, and he was hitting so hard, the force was so hard, every time he'd do it, he would swerve over into the other lane," Stevenson recalled.

Stevenson says once they realized the man was hitting a baby, they called 911. Stevenson says the beating continued for about seven miles.

"He would hit the child, turn around, drive his car, bounce to his music, fix his little hat, like it ain't nothing," Stevenson said.

A neighbor says Cox left Jayceon in the driveway of his mother's home.

"I noticed a young lady screaming," said Mary Brown. "I ran to her and I asked her what was going on. And then she had told me then that her baby was dead."

Jayceon was rushed to the hospital, but died after being removed from life support on Aug. 8.

Defense attorney Eric Bates argued his client was guilty of reckless homicide, not murder.

Cox is scheduled to be sentenced on Jan. 24.
