Louisville Metro Council members collect toys for children of jail inmates

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville Metro Council members are collecting toys for kids whose parents are in jail.

You can catch city officials -- decked out as Santa Claus and his helpers -- at the corner of S. 6th Street and W. Jefferson Street. They're accepting unwrapped toys and money to help children of incarcerated parents.

Children of inmates at Louisville Metro Corrections and the Kentucky Correctional Institute for Women in Pewee Valley will receive the donated toys for Christmas.

It's something council members have been doing for 10 years.

"Their parents made a mistake, but the children didn't, so we're trying to make their Christmas a little bit better," said Metro Council member Kelly Downard.

The toy drive takes place every morning this week from 7:45 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.
