LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The Kentucky Board of Education will meet in Frankfort on Wednesday and is expected to take a stance on whether it will support a measure to allow charter schools in the state.

Wednesday's meeting comes about a week after the state held a day-long special meeting about the issue, knowing that with Republicans taking full control at the Capitol in January, charter schools in Kentucky are now more likely.

During that meeting, which drew a large crowd in both the board room and an overflow room, state board members heard from experts about charter schools, as well as how charters can be developed and operated.

Charters are public schools with special contracts allowing them to operate outside normal rules and regulations.

Kentucky is one of just seven states that currently ban them, but that could change next year.

On Wednesday, the board will discuss charter schools and is expected to act upon a request to approve elements of a charter school proposal. The board will then discuss its legislative agenda, which could also have charter schools in it.

Wednesday's meeting starts at 9 a.m., but the discussion about charter schools will not take place until after lunch.

If you are interesting in watching the meeting, it will be live-streamed here.
