Kentucky offers 'Scam Alerts' to protect public from illegitimate charities

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Scammers posing as legitimate charities are stealing the life savings from some of Kentucky's elderly population.

The warning came from Kentucky Attorney General Andy Beshear on Wednesday as he met with about 50 senior citizens at the Sun Valley Community Center.

Beshear says elderly scams are more prevalent during the holiday season when many grandparents are already in the giving spirit.

The state is offering free Scam Alerts -- text messages sent directly to your phone that highlight the latest tricks to look out for.

"We're fighting back with technology too," Beshear said. "If we can provide to more than 5,000 that we've already signed up for Scam Alerts the information that they can use to protect their community, then we can make a real difference."
