LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- All lanes of Preston Highway are back open following a multi-vehicle injury crash early Thursday.

Six people were hurt in the crash; four are in critical condition. Two additional patients were injured, but they are not considered critical.

Police spokesman Dwight Mitchell says five vehicles were involved in the crash on Preston Highway at Laclede Lane just before 6 a.m.  Initial reports were that seven vehicles were involved.

Investigators say the driver of a Nissan Pathfinder SUV tried to make a left turn from Prestwood Drive into a southbound lane of Preston Highway when the driver failed to yield the right of way and and was hit by a car traveling northbound on Preston. Moments later, two additional accidents happened in the same area.

Northbound Preston Highway was closed at Laclede Lane for several hours.

The LMPD Traffic Unit has been called to investigate, which means this is being treated as a very serious crash.

Jefferson County Public Schools tweeted that Male High School buses had to be rerouted to I-264 around the crash. They also advised those driving students to the school to be aware.
