Record number of packages expected to flow through UPS Worldport during holiday season

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville's UPS Worldport air hub is gearing up for a busy holiday shipping season.

The operation expects to double the number of packages they process, as it gets closer to Christmas.  UPS spokeswoman Michelle Polk tells WDRB that Louisville's operation handles 1.8 million packages on an average day. But during the holiday season, it's closer to 4 million each day.

UPS predicts that more than 700 million packages will be mailed over the entirety of the holiday season. That's about a 14% increase above the peak delivery period last year.

"It's organized chaos," Polk says. "But everyone knows what they're supposed to be doing. Everyone has a mission, and, really, that mission is getting that package delivered to our customers in a safe manner, but also very quickly."

UPS officials credit the rise in e-commerce for the spike in packages.

To avoid a holiday shipping crisis, Polk advises people to get their orders in before December 22nd. The busiest day of the year for UPS is expected to be Monday, December 19th.

UPS hired about 2,500 people in Louisville; the company still plans to hire more.
