INDICTED: Harlan County, Ky. grandparents arrested after child allegedly found wandering with sleeping pills
The boy allegedly told officers that his grandmother had given him a sleeping pill and told him to take a nap.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Harlan County, Kentucky, couple has been arrested months after authorities say their young grandchild was found wandering on the street alone with a bottle of sleeping pills.
According to arrest reports, it happened on Tuesday, April 26, just after 3:30 p.m. on Chad Street, in Loyall, Kentucky.
Loyall Police say the child's grandparents live at different addresses on Chad Street and the boy walked away from one of those addresses while his grandparents were asleep. According to the arrest report, he was found blocks away on Mapother Street -- and was carrying a pill bottle containing over-the-counter sleeping pills, as well as two pills used to treat heartburn.
The child allegedly told officers that his grandmother gave him a sleeping pill to help him take a nap, and that she had taken one as well.
The boy "appeared drowsy," according to the arrest report.
Police say the boy told them that his grandfather wouldn't answer his door and he couldn't get his grandmother, so he tried to go to someone else's house so he wouldn't be alone.
According to the arrest report, the boy was taken to the police station.
Officers eventually went to the home of the boy's grandfather, 60-year-old Fred Jones, on Chad Street, where they met Jones. When Jones was asked if he knew where his grandson was, he allegedly responded that he was in the yard, and that he had "just seen" the boy a few minutes before.
Police say the boy had been at the police station for approximately 45 minutes by this time.
According to the arrest report, Jones smelled of alcohol and said he had been drinking mouthwash before taking a nap.
Police also spoke with the boy's grandmother, Sherry Jones, who lived at a different address on Chad Street. According to an arrest report, Sherry Jones was asleep when officers found her. When they asked her about her grandchild, she said he was at his grandfather's and that she had just gotten him off the school bus a few minutes earlier, but officers then informed her the bus had arrived hours ago.
She said she didn't know where the boy had gotten the pill bottle.
Both Fred and Sherry Jones were arrested at the time and charged with endangering the welfare of a minor and first degree wanton endangerment.
On Monday, Dec. 5, they were indicted by a grand jury -- and they were re-arrested on Wednesday, Dec. 7. Both are being held in the Harlan County Detention Center.
