LMAS and Kentucky Humane Society offer December adoption special

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - It rarely happens, but local animal shelters were nearly cleared out during a recent free adoption special. Already, the shelters are full again, but you can still get a good deal just in time for Christmas.

Some dogs waiting to be adopted give you soft, sad eyes, while others are more vocal, pleading with you to give them a home. Jesse Becht fell in love with Kami at Animal House Adoption Center off Newburg Road.

"Looked her up on the internet, seen pictures of her, then took her out there, she was real mellow, laid back, seemed like a sweetie," Becht said.

He says it was time to get a dog, and the December adoption special did the trick.

"Christmas present to myself," Becht smiled. "$25 ... you can't beat it."

The only time you can beat the $25 adoption special is on the rare occasion when the animals are free. Thanks to a sponsorship by Zappos.com, the Kentucky Humane Society and Animal House found homes for 325 animals for Thanksgiving.

"The day that we started that free adoption special on Black Friday, there was a line of people outside the door before we even opened," said Erica Coghill, communications specialist with Louisville Metro Animal Services. "[It was] similar to what you were seeing at the big box stores."

"We cleared out almost every single one of our kennels here at the Animal House Adoption Center. That's a rare sight here. Just as often as we're adopting animals out, we're getting new animals in."

Once again, the shelters are full. Through the month of December, you can get most cats and dogs for $25 through The Kentucky Humane Society and Metro Animal Services.

"The reality is, you don't want animals to live in a shelter, in a cage, in a kennel," Coghill said. "Adoptions, that's the best thing you can do, is bring them out of that environment and give them a loving home."

The Bluegrass Boxer Club saw how much of a success the Black Friday special was and stepped up for more free adoptions.

"Because of that, they ended up giving us a large sum of money, very generous, and we will now be able to adopt out 25 additional animals for free," Coghill said. The

Bluegrass Boxer Club is also donating a free small bag of dog food for those 25 free adoptions. Coghill says the free adoption special will likely run the week of Christmas, but it is not set in stone. She recommends checking the LMAS Facebook page for news about the special.

You can also get your pet's picture taken with Santa at Animal House. For $15, you get a professional photo of your pet with Santa. All proceeds benefit the animals. The photo will be printed on-the-spot, and you will also be e-mailed a digital copy.
