RAW VIDEO | Gov. Matt Bevin holds news conference to review first year in office

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin says the state has accomplished a lot, but there is still much more to get done.

His message came during an hour-long news conference Friday morning looking back at his first year in office.

Bevin staged the event not at the Capitol, but at a restaurant in Louisville.

He was animated as he talked about the accomplishments of his first year, which he said included signing an informed consent abortion bill, a felony expungement law, cutting red tape, chopping the budget (while giving raises to some state employees) and putting more than $1 billion into the ailing pension system.

But, he says, that's just a drop in the bucket.

Bevin is calling his budget the most fiscally responsible in our lifetimes. He also foiled the Democrats' strategy to make his record the big issue in the 2016 election.

Instead, Republicans now -- for the first time -- have a super majority in both the Senate and the House.

"A year ago at this time, there were 44 members of the House in the Republican Party," Bevin said. "There are 64 members. That's pretty unprecedented, pretty remarkable in many respects. And what it was is the people of Kentucky saying, 'You know what? We want not only what we've gotten, we want more of it.' And they sent an overwhelming message."

Bevin also talked about his priorities for next year, including school choice and right-to-work laws -- and he did not hold back on criticism of his fiercest opponent, Democratic Attorney General Andy Beshear.

In response, the Democratic Party issued a statement calling Bevin's first year a success for his politics, but a failure for Kentucky.
