Registration for East End bridge caravan starts Saturday morning

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- If you want to be one of the first people to cross the East End bridge when it opens Sunday, Dec. 18, you'll need to register online.

As part of the opening ceremonies, police will escort a caravan of 500 vehicles across the newly completed bridge. The first 500 registrants will be invited to participate in the caravan.

Officials expect the 500 slots to fill up quickly, so people should be ready to register here at 10 a.m.

Participants in the police-escorted caravan will receive antique silver commemorative medallions (up to four per vehicle) with an etching of the new bridge.

The medallions will serve as the second in a "matching set" created for the Ohio River Bridges project.

The first of the commemorative set was created for the December 2015 opening of the Lincoln Bridge.

More than 35,000 vehicles a day are expected to use East End bridge, which has not yet been named.
