Open mic event showcases local talent to help curb violence in Louisville

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Showcasing local talent to help curb violence in Louisville.

That was the goal of an open mic event hosted by the River City Drum Corp and Artsreach at the Kentucky Center Sunday.

There were singers, drummers, and poetry readings during the three-hour event.

Organizers say in a time where the City of Louisville is seeing an increase in violent crimes, it's a way to bring people together who all have something in common.

"We wanted to show a consistency in the city of Louisville that there are avenues and outlets for young people and families.  We wanted to create this - this was created not just for young people or adults - it was family entertainment," Co-organizer Lyndell Johnson said.

The performances used to take place monthly but will now be held four times a year.

The next open mic event is in March.
