Local leaders make push to build new veterans hospital in west Louisville

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- With time running out, city and community leaders make a push to build the new veterans hospital in west Louisville.

A group called Empower West Louisville hopes to convince the Veteran's Administration it's the best location.

The VA has already spent $13 million on land off Brownsboro Road, near the Watterson Expressway.

Many neighbors oppose the site due to heavy traffic in the area.

On Monday, city leaders and veterans advocates made the case for building the new hospital in west Louisville. They say it's more convenient for many veterans, and will give a much needed boost to the neighborhood. "By placing this hospital in an area that is economically depressed, but still meets all the other requirements, the American veteran will be allowed to build a community within their own hometown," said retired Brig. General Rob Givens, of the  U.S. Air Force.

The VA will likely make a final decision on the location of the new hospital in February.
