Preston Highway tops new list of most congested roadways in Louisville area

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- If you think your daily commute is awful, it could be worse ... unless you're in Okolona.

The latest list of the most congested roadways in the Louisville area might be surprising, unless you live and work in that area.

The worst is Preston Highway between the Gene Snyder Freeway and Cooper Chapel Road, an area where Sarah Allgeier opened DelectaBites Bakery just seven weeks ago.

She's not at all surprised to hear that her business is near the No. 1 most congested roadway in the region.

“I've been caught in rush hour there before and had to wait patiently to get through,” Allgeier said. “You can't go anywhere in a rush, that's for sure."

The Kentuckiana Regional Planning and Development agency, or KIPDA, compiled the list based on four years of data.

The agency looked at the amount of traffic versus how much a road is designed to carry.

“When we look at the traffic count, we compare that to the capacity that we've already determined. Just to see where the congestion areas are,” KIPDA spokesperson Ashley Davidson said.

For example, the stretch of Preston Highway ranked No. 1 is some 12,000 vehicles over capacity.

The traffic volume is compounded by large retail stores in the area, along with a movie theater and the Commerce Crossing office park.

No. 2 on the list is Shelbyville Road between Christian Way and Whipps Mill Road near Oxmoor Mall

In fact, three of the top five are stretches of Shelbyville Road, along with Preston Highway and a section of Westport Road.

Six through 10 include Highway 44 between I-65 and Melwood Drive in Bullitt County and US 31 between Charlestown Road and Utica Street in Clark County, Ind.

But KIPDA says these rankings change over time based on variables such as construction projects and new development.

“Everyone thinks that their commute is probably the worst," Davidson said. "But when you look at this, you'll see that maybe yours was the worst today, and somebody else's will be the worst a few in a few months."

The agency says the information is useful in helping governments decide where to spend money on improvements.
