LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Two schools in addition to the University of Louisville have emerged as football programs that reportedly received confidential pre-game information from a Wake Forest radio analyst over the last three seasons.

Virginia Tech athletic director Whit Babcock released a statement Thursday that said that Babcock was “disappointed and embarrassed,” that a member of retired coach Frank Beamer’s staff received information in 2014 from Tommy Elrod, a former Wake Forest coach and player.

“We hold ourselves to a higher standard at Virginia Tech,” Babcock said.

Wake Forest defeated Tech, 6-3, in double overtime in 2014.

That story was reported by Pete Thamel of Sports Illustrated, who also wrote that Wake Forest has informed Army about its concerns that information was given to the football staff at West Point. (Army defeated Wake Forest, 21-13, on Oct. 29.)

Elrod was dismissed from the school’s radio team earlier this week. In a statement Wednesday, U of L athletic director Tom Jurich said Cards’ offensive coordinator Lonnie Galloway received a call from Elrod prior to the U of L-Wake game Nov. 12.

Jurich said that Elrod gave information to Galloway, who shared it with the U of L defensive coaches. Jurich said that “none of the special plays were run during the course of the game.”

In mid-November, Wake athletic director Ron Wellman said the school discovered evidence of the breach when a member of the Wake traveling party found materials at Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium prior to the game. Dave Clawson coached the Demon Deacons to a 6-6 record as well as a Dec. 27 game with Temple in the Military Bowl.

Louisville defeated Wake Forest, 44-12.

Indiana University is another program that played Wake Forest in 2015 and 2016.

IU athletic director Fred Glass did not respond to a text message sent Thursday morning that asked if Wake Forest administrators had communicated with IU about Elrod. Two other Indiana representatives did not return telephone calls.

Wake Forest defeated Indiana, 33-28, last Sept. 24. The Hoosiers won at Wake, 31-24, during the 2015 season.

Glass fired IU football coach Kevin Wilson for what the athletic director called “philosophical differences,” following the season.

Tallahassee.com reported that the Florida State athletic department has not been called by Wake Forest officials.
