Paoli Peaks ready to open Friday for its 38th winter season

Posted: Updated:

PAOLI, Ind. (WDRB) – Paoli Peaks will open for its 38th winter season Friday at noon, the first time in the past two years that the park will open before Christmas.

"We're just super stoked to get out here and share the winter magic for our guests” said new general manager Greg Gavrilets.

Gavrilets became the general manager in August. He said he wants to better connect to the surrounding community with the park.

"Mother Nature is cooperating. Our snow makers have been doing great. Our crew has been doing awesome. We're all excited and really couldn't ask for a better start to the season."

As of Thursday, the snow makers have been pumping water and creating snow for a total of 60 hours over the past five days. The machines will pump anywhere from 2,000 to 6,000 gallons of water per minute from the creek and pond on site.

“Normally, we say it needs to be below freezing to make snow,” Gavrilets said. “But ideally, it needs to be 26 or below. Right now, I think it's a balmy 17 degrees out here. So these machines work a whole lot better the colder it gets."

In optimal conditions, crews can make a foot of snow in 24 hours. At the start of the season Friday, there will be a base of three to four feet.

And the pro-shop is gearing up for the winter rush as well.

"We are welcoming everyone to come up and get their skis and snowboards tuned, waxed, ready to go,” said Annie Laurie-Trueblood who works in the Paoli Peaks pro-shop. “Any questions they have, we can get it fixed so they can get out on the snow here."

There are 65 skiable acres at Paoli Peaks. That includes 16 slopes and two learning areas for beginners. There is also a 700-foot tubing park, which is one of the largest in the Midwest.

The slopes will open at noon, and the tubing park will open at 4 p.m. For more information on prices and discounts, click here.
