East End Bridge opens today

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) After three years of construction and decades of waiting, the East End Bridge is finally set to open today.

Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin and Indiana Governor-elect Eric Holcomb will be among the officials who mark the historic moment in a ceremony planned on the bridge at 2 p.m. After the ceremony, 500 pre-approved cars will take part in a historic caravan, becoming the first members of the public to cross it.

Indiana Department of Transportation officials tell WDRB that the bridge should open to the public around 8 or 9 p.m.

The East End bridge, which connects Utica, IN and Prospect, KY, is expected to handle about 30,000 vehicles each day. It’s the final span to be completed in the Ohio River Bridges project, which included building the East End and Abraham Lincoln bridges and a major overhaul of the Kennedy Bridge.

Tolling begins on all three bridges on December 30th. Drivers are encouraged to sign up for a RiverLink transponder to get a discounted rate of $2 per car. Frequent users can get a discount of $1 per crossing with 40 trips across the bridges each month. Drivers without a transponder will pay $4 per crossing, and will receive a bill in the mail.
