Lewis and Clark Bridge opens to traffic ahead of schedule

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) – The new Lewis and Clark Bridge is now open to traffic following an opening ceremony Sunday afternoon.

Officials say the bridge was scheduled to open around 8 p.m. Sunday, but opened around 4:45 p.m. ahead of schedule.

Indiana Gov. and Vice President-elect Mike Pence named the new eastern crossing of the Ohio River Bridges Project The Lewis and Clark Bridge.

Governor-elect Eric Holcomb made the announcement at the opening ceremony.

Will Wingfield, spokesman for the Indiana Department of Transportation, told WDRB News earlier this year that the “customary process” is for bridges and highway sections to be named based on recommendations passed by the legislature.

Pence has used executive orders to name four structures while in office, including a stretch of U.S. 31 near Lakeville and a bridge on Indiana 46 in Brown County.

A resolution urging INDOT to name the bridge for 18th century explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark passed the Indiana House of Representatives 91-0 this year before it stalled in the state Senate.
