Dozens of horses die in Lexington barn fire

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Dozens of horses are dead after a barn fire early Sunday in Lexington, Ky.

Officials believe the fire at Mercury Equine Center may have been started by lightning from passing storms. A farm hand who was sleeping at a home nearby woke up, raced to the barn and tried to save the horses.

A total of 36 thoroughbreds and yearlings were in the barn.

At least seven horses were saved before the building started to collapse, and a few more were found wandering the property.
