ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. (WDRB) – A $10,000 reward is being offered for information in a case of stolen guns in Elizabethtown.

The burglary happened at Sportsman Rod and Gun in Elizabethtown shortly after 1 a.m. Thursday.

"They broke through the front door, breaking the glass," said J.J. Akins, president of Sportsman Rod and Gun. "They made their way to our new gun selection."

Akins says 24 guns were stolen: 20 pistols and 4 long guns.

"You always worry that you're going to be hit in this industry," he said. "It's not so much if, it's when."

Akins says he’s been at the particular shopping center since 2010, but nothing like this has ever happened before.

"This is the first one here,” Akins said. "Unfortunately, criminals get their guns this way."

Between the repairs and merchandise, Akins says the burglary has cost him around $13,000.

"We've already reordered the inventory. We've already repaired the damage," he said. "It's already back for sale."

One of the most expensive items in the store, an M-1 Garand rifle worth around $2,500, was left behind. The two thieves were caught on surveillance video, but at least one was wearing a mask, and the other's face can’t be seen.

"There's no doubt they'd been here before," Akins said. "They knew exactly where to go."

The ATF is offering a reward of $5,000 in the case that will be matched by the National Shooting Sports Foundation for a total of $10,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction.

The phone numbers for the ATF and Elizabethtown Police Department are 1-800-ATF-GUNS (800-283-4867) or 270-765-4125. Tips can also be submitted by visiting www.reportit.com. All information may be given anonymously
