Suspect reportedly stealing from Christmas cards in Elizabethtown mailboxes
Elizabethtown Police are asking for the public’s help in finding out who is responsible for rummaging through people's mail.
ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. (WDRB) – Elizabethtown Police are asking for the public’s help in finding out who is responsible for rummaging through people's mail.
Detectives say they received nine reports for tampered mail on Monday.
“Probably about 7 o'clock that morning we got our first report that someone had been in someone's mailbox,” said Officer Virgil Willoughby with Elizabethtown Police.
Police believe whoever the thieves were are targeting Christmas cards.
“It appears they're just looking for Christmas cards,” Willoughby said. “Opening those up, looking to see if there's a gift card or cash.”
It happened in the area of Langley Trace and Hickory Lane. Police say they’re used to hearing about package thefts from the front door step, but rummaging through mail is different.
“It's the first time I can remember that we've had a series of mailboxes that have been gone through,” Willoughby said.
Anyone with information about this case is urged to call Elizabethtown Police at (270) 765-4125
No arrests have been made.
“Ability, desire, opportunity: Those are the three elements that have got to come together for someone to perpetrate a crime,” Willoughby said. “You can't do anything ability, you can’t do anything about desire, but you can do something about opportunity.”
