Red Yeti brewery changes its name after Colorado brewery threatens law suit

JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. (WDRB) -

Brandi Ronau and her husband Paul started The Red Yeti Brewing Company on Spring Street in Jeffersonville.

“[The yeti] is supposed to represent my husband," Brandi Ronau said. "He's a big, tall red-headed guy."

A week after it opened, they got a call from a brewery they say they never heard of, Great Divide Brewing Company from Colorado.

“We were kind of surprised," Brandi Ronau said. "We didn't really know what they were talking about because I had never heard of them."

Great Divide says its trademarked hairy creature logo looked too much like Red Yeti’s hairy creature.

“They have a beer called Yeti. Our business is called that, so there is some confusion there,” Brandi Ronau said.

She says her brewery is so small that she's not really sure how Great Divide found it.

“I was kind of honored that they would even think we were competition,” she said.

The Colorado brewing company demanded The Red Yeti Brewing Company change or it would sue, accusing the southern Indiana company of trademark infringement.

“We tried to avoid any litigation, so we did change our name," Brandi Ronau said. "Initially, it was Red Yeti Brewing Company and now it's The Red Yeti.

Great Divide said that wasn’t enough.

Now that the two breweries reached an agreement according to court documents, the Red Yeti restaurant will keep its name, but the Red Yeti bar will change its name again. This time, it will be called Red Foot Brewing.

Both the restaurant and the bar can, however, still use the monster-like silhouette as long as it’s not labeled on the beer.

A statement to WDRB News from the founder of Great Divide says "I am glad to have a positive resolution that respects Great Divide's property rights."

All the changes at the Red Yeti will be made by Feb. 1.
