LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Kentucky State Police say they've arrested two people for allegedly trying to to kill a family member.
According to a news release from Kentucky State Police, the alleged plot was uncovered during the search for a missing person. Police say that on Thursday, Dec. 22, police received a call that 58-year-old Hershel Starrett was missing from Harlan County, Kentucky.
On Christmas Eve, Kentucky State Police and members of the Harlan County Rescue Squad began searching the area around Hershel Starrett's home, but were unable to find him.
However, over the course of the investigation, police say they discovered that 47-year-old Melissa Starrett (the wife of the missing man) and 42-year-old James Starrett (the cousin of the missing man) had tried to buy a gun to kill a third man, unrelated to the missing persons investigation.
On Wednesday, Dec. 28, police arrested both Melissa and James Starrett and charged them with attempted complicity to commit murder and receipt of stolen property. Both are being held in the Harlan County Detention Center at the time of this writing.
Police reiterate that these charges are unrelated to the disappearance of Hershel Starrett.
