Salvation Army exceeds $475,000 'Red Kettle' fundraising goal

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The Salvation Army has exceeded its fundraising goal for the 2016 Christmas season.

According to a news release from the organization, the "Red Kettle" goal of $475,000 was announced by former U of L basketball player Darrell Griffith, a spokesperson for The Salvation Army, back on Nov. 9.

The organization states that it raised $511,982 at its 71 collection locations.

"Words cannot describe my gratitude to those who gave in support of this campaign," said Major Roy Williams, spokesman for The Salvation Army. "For 126 years, the Red Kettle[s] have been a symbol of hope to those who are hurting, struggling and in need of help, and to have this community support us in that endeavor is a blessing; a true Christmas miracle."

A gold Kruggerand -- worth $1,100 -- and two gold rings were among the donations this year, according to the news release.

The Salvation Army serves Jefferson, Oldham, Bullitt and Spencer counties.
