Louisville airport touts recent expansion, with even more coming in 2017

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- It was a big year at Louisville International Airport, complete with a new airline, new shops and more expansion.

About a year ago, a massive remodeling project started.

"We have a new selection of gift shops and restaurants, and we do very well in supporting those as a community," said Skip Miller, executive director of the Louisville Regional Airport Authority.

The final phase is about done. Coming in early 2017 will be a Coal's Artisan Pizza, the Bourbon Academy Tasting Room, new Brooks Brothers Store, Brighton and Finish Line.

The nearly $10 million terminal improvement project included new carpeting, artwork and four escalators.

"Because of their entry into the marketplace, we can now boast we have non-stop service to 21 destinations from the Louisville International Airport," Miller said.

The Regional Airport Authority also serves Bowman Field, where there was some controversy this year after people living in the area lost their fight to prevent 200 trees from being chopped down. Airport authority officials say it's needed for safety, and it's an FAA requirement.

And UPS also broke ground this year on a major expansion, which will nearly triple the size of the UPS Centennial Ground Hub facility to serve customers more quickly.

Workers will be able to sort 85,000 packages per hour, which is double what they do now.

"That is the expansion of the Centennial Hub, which is about a quarter-million-square-foot facility, now growing to nearly 900,000 square feet," Miller said. "It's a $300 million investment on their 116-acre parcel, which will add about 300 jobs to the economy."

There are a lot of leisure travelers too. The number one overseas destination from the Louisville International Airport is Cancun, with 35 passengers a day.
