ORANGE COUNTY, Ind. (WDRB) -- The family of 66-year-old James Bryson didn't hear from him for days surrounding the holiday weekend.

Bryson's nephew owns Chicago Pizza on State Road 56 in French Lick. He said he went to Bryson's house Tuesday to check on him. When no one answered the door, he came back with the police. The doors and windows were locked, so he forced his way in.

He found Bryson alone in the house, dead. He says it looked like he had been murdered.

“To find out something like that happened right down the road, it's just in my 67 years, I never knew anybody to get killed,” said Diana Moore, a neighbor nearby.

Police are still looking for a suspect, but they think Bryson might have been killed by someone he knew, possibly someone he let inside because there was no sign anyone broke in.

Now Indiana State Police need help finding out what Bryson did between Christmas Eve and Tuesday.

“He was very soft spoken, very nice to me," Moore said.

One neighbor said she saw him walking his dogs down the road Christmas morning. She says he was a friendly neighbor, but now she's terrified, and other neighbors agree.

“We're still in shock about it,” Moore said.

Bryson reportedly did not have a criminal past. His family says he kept to himself and didn't have any enemies.

He lived with his sister, and police say she was out of town for Christmas.

The family says funeral services are scheduled for next weekend.

A cause of death has not yet been released, and police are not saying why they suspect foul play.
