French law goes into effect banning people from looking at work email at home

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Ignoring work emails after business hours is now the law in France.

On Jan. 1, the new law went into effect allowing employees to ignore work emails at home.

But, a HR consultant in New York says the policy probably wouldn't work here in the U.S. He says it's more about respecting personal hours on an employer-to-employer basis instead of a federal standard like France's "Right to Disconnect" law.

"When an employee feels like the employer has their best interest in mind, and the employer is concerned for them, they're more likely to be concerned for the employer," said Barry Drexler, president of Drexler Consulting.

He adds that we feel better about responding after hours if it comes without repercussions to our personal lives.
