Record number of animals adopted from LMAS on Tuesday

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - It was a line that you might only see on Black Friday.

People were lined up out the door at Louisville Metro Animal Services on Tuesday because the shelter waived their pet adoption fees.

Following a "Pictures with Santa" fundraising event last month, $1,000 was given to the shelter to be used toward adoptions for large dogs over 40 pounds and all cats.

Overflow parking was used as cars constantly arrived to the animal center. Fifty-two animals were in the shelter Tuesday morning, and by 6 p.m., 35 were adopted, giving the shelter a 70 percent increase in daily adoptions and more room to take in new animals.

“People want to give back in the community. They want to pay forward," said LMAS Communications Specialist Erica Coghill. "Not only help a family be able to adopt an animal, but help an animal get out of the shelter and into a forever home."

Coghill says one man came in Tuesday and donated $200 without even adopting an animal.

Louisville Metro Animal Services is an “open” shelter, meaning they must accept every animal that is surrendered or rescued.

“We cannot turn any animals away, so if someone comes and tells us they do not want their animal anymore, we have to take it,” Coghill said.

Even though the fees are waived, the animals still need to be introduced to possible new owners and other pets to see if the new dogs or cats would be a good “match.”

Rows and rows of empty kennels and cages is a rare sight at shelters, however more animals will arrive at the shelter Wednesday morning.

Coghill says she expects a large turnout for Wednesday as well.

The holidays are a busy time of year for animal shelters and animal surrenders, but the busiest time of year being mid-summer.
