JCPS cancels Thursday classes due to weather, makeup day is March 30

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- There will be no school for Jefferson County Public School students on Thursday as district officials made the decision to cancel classes around 4:30 a.m.

This is the first bad weather day of the 2016-17 year for the district, which means the day will be made up on Thursday, March 30, 2017.

"The safety of our kids is always our primary concern," said Michael Raisor, chief operations officer during Wednesday's weather briefing with media. "As difficult as it is to make a recommendation on a dry ground morning, if we get a prediction that there's going to be an inch, inch-and-a-half or 2 inches of snow, during the afternoon commute, we all know what that can do here and we don't want to have our kids stuck on buses similar to what happened in Atlanta a few years ago, thinking they could make it home."

A Winter Weather Advisory has been posted for the entire region Thursday  The advisory goes into effect at 7 a.m. EST and remains in effect through 7 a.m. Friday.

WDRB meteorologists say that while this won't be a huge storm, it will be the first good snow of the season and are in good overall agreement with the models concerning this system to be about 1 to 3 inches for the entire area.

Meteorologist Jeremy Kappell says it will start off as flurries across Southern Indiana before expanding to snow showers for areas along and north of 64 during the morning hours. Light accumulations of better than 1 inch may be possible by late morning in affected areas

He says following perhaps a bit of a lull late morning, a secondary wave of snow looks to develop into the first part of the afternoon across our central and northern counties before expanding to the south with higher snowfall rates.

The heaviest of the snow looks to taper off during the early evening hours for the metro area with snow showers lingering into the overnight.
