Incoming Indiana governor has plans to modify needle exchange program

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Indiana's incoming governor has plans to change the state's needle exchange program.

The current program signed into law by the current governor -- Vice President-elect Mike Pence --  requires individual counties to be vetted and get state permission to open a needle exchange.

Governor-elect Eric Holcomb says he wants a new law that will allow local officials to establish their own needle exchanges.

This comes in response to the HIV epidemic, which has infected almost 200 people in southern Indiana.

Most of those infected were intravenous drug users.
