RADCLIFF, Ky. (WDRB) -- A 17-year-old is dead after police say he drowned in a pond in Radcliff Thursday evening.

The coroner has not released the victim's name, but his family members said the teen's name is Elijah Thornton.

Three different emergency crews responded to the scene around 6 p.m. at Centennial Avenue and Blackjack Road. Police say a group of people were swimming in heavy rain when one person went under and didn't resurface.

After more than 2 hours, rescue crews returned from the pond and the Hardin County Coroner arrived at the scene. A body was recovered about 8:15 p.m., according to Harding County EMS spokesman Bryce Shumate.

Hardin County Schools Superintendent Teresa Morgan says Elijah was a junior at North Hardin High School. She asked that members of the community and members of the district keep the Thornton family in their thoughts and prayers.

Morgan released a statement offering support for Elijah's family, friends and classmates. "The students and staff of North Hardin High School have endured a tragic loss.  Elijah Thornton, a NHHS junior, was taken from us yesterday evening.  He was a young man with an incredibly kind heart.  Many teachers are remembering him as someone with a kind and gentle soul who would drop by their classroom each morning to just say hello, share a encouraging word and offer a warm hug to start the day."

Neighbors who live near the pond like James Heath are shocked by the tragedy. "For somebody to get stuck drowning in the pond is really crazy, because nothing like that's really happened."
